Herbal Viagra: The Unfolding Lamar Odom Tragedy
Basketball is my favorite sport. I like all levels of basketball: college, professional, Olympic, even high school. Here in New York City, high school basketball is big, and as a result, we praise any high school kid who is really good at the sport and follow their career. One such player is Lamar Odom, who was a high school phenomenon at Christ the King high school in Queens, New York during the late ‘90s. He went on to have respectable a 10-year career on the NBA, although he may be better known to the masses as Khloe Kardashian’s ex-husband. Three days ago, he was found unconscious with white material oozing out of his mouth at a brothel near Las Vegas, Nevada. Today, October 15,...
Exercise is Crucial in the Fight Against Prostate Cancer
What follows is an excerpt from my upcoming book on the integrative treatment of prostate cancer: We are simply not made to sit for long periods. We are built to move. Humans need to exercise, plain and simple. It does not matter what exercise you choose as long as you do something. However, the key is to get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. You may already be familiar with many of the common benefits of regular exercise—lower stress, weight loss, better sleep, and a plenty of other advantages. However, in terms of prostate cancer, research has shown that fitness can help you reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer, prevent it from returning, or lower the chance...
My Glyphosate Article Attacked by Local Monsanto Seed Dealer and My Response
This past week I experienced a first. One of my monthly nutrition articles in our local paper, the Ozaukee News Graphic, was attacked in a letter to the editor. The headline reads, “Rosen column based on faulty science.” Once I read the letter I of course had to see who this guy was, and sure enough he was a local seed distributor of Monsanto products. The irony is that the article is limited by space so I could only get so much in. My rebuttal to his attack will allow me to publish additional points. Hopefully the news paper will publish it, but if not, it is here on the web! This might be a bit long, but is well worth your time to read. Here’s his letter followed by my response...
Now’s the Time to Take Advantage of Fresh Vegetables and Their Nutritional Benefits – Part 1
I don’t know about you, but this is my favorite time of the year. Not only is the weather beautiful and the days long, but it means our fresh local vegetables are here! They are at the road side stands, the Farmer’s Markets, and the CSAs begin delivering. For those of you unfamiliar with the term CSA it means Consumer Supported Agriculture. You (the consumer) buy direct from local farmers who offer these programs. There are many CSAs in our area with deliveries likely into your neighborhood and I encourage you to find one. It is not only good for you, but supports your local farmer as well. The CSA I belong to had its first delivery of the year including basil, lettuce, spinach,...
The Truth About Plant Based Protein
Protein is essential to a wide range of bodily functions and in building and repairing muscle. No argument there. What I do object to is how the meat and dairy industries have spent millions, if not billions, on convincing us that the only source of high quality protein are their products. This is simply not true. Proteins consist of twenty amino acids, of which eleven are naturally synthesized by our body. We are able to get the remaining nine, which are also known as Essential Amino Acids, from the foods we eat and the nutritional support with which we complement our diet. So to be clear, our body needs to ingest these nine Essential Amino Acids, not protein per se. This is a key...
Your Spectacular ROI from Exercise
Did you know that on any given day, only 5% of the US adult population exercise? We are not talking about training for a triathlon; we are talking about any form of moderate exertion. Not surprisingly, by 2015 it is estimated that 75% of Americans will be overweight, with 40% of us being classified as obese. We are damaging our future through poor lifestyle choices. How can any healthcare system work in such an environment? How can you fully enjoy your life as a man if you are not physically fit enough to take full advantage of it? Not preaching. Not lecturing. Just saying. We encourage you to make healthy lifestyle choices, which include improving your fitness level by incorporating...
Modified Citrus Pectin and Prostate Cancer
The Takeaway First One should not take supplements to cure a disease as they generally do not do that by themselves. What the right supplement combination do is either protect against oxidative stress, reduce inflammation or strengthen immunity – at least that what they can often do. Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP) is one of those unknown ingredients found in dietary supplements with pretty good scientific research behind it. A recent study in a chemistry journal confirms that MCP and similar compounds had strong antiproliferative effects. So, while MCP or no other supplement cures cancer or any disease, I often recommend MCP in carefully designed formula. What is Modified Citrus...
Get to Know your Prostate
“Know thyself.” No one knows exactly who came up with this wise phrase (it was definitely a Greek, but which one is uncertain), but I think we all agree that there’s something to it. Knowing yourself is powerful because it’s an ability that other animals don’t have. While they live blissfully ignorant in the moment, subject to their impulses, we can act intelligently in order to achieve the best possible outcome for ourselves. Specifically, we can have knowledge about how our bodies work, and we can use this knowledge to live for maximum health. So, here’s my question: do you know what your prostate gland does (or did if it was removed)? If you don’t know what the prostate...
